New Projects: Estimating the health impact of a sugar sweetened drinks tax in local leisure facilities in Sheffield

Penny Breeze is carrying out research that aims to estimate the health impact of a sugar sweetened drinks tax in local leisure facilities in Sheffield. Breeze said: "In July 2016 SIV launched the SIV Health Fund - a 20p levy on all beverages containing 5mg of sugar per 100ml or more sold in leisure centres. The scheme was designed with multiple nudges in order to influence customer purchasing behaviour towards low and non-sugar options."

This project will analyse and evaluate the impact of this, specifically on improving health outcomes of the people of Sheffield (SIV customers). Breeze added: "We expect to deliver recommendations on the effectiveness of this scheme as a potential public health policy." The project will run up until the end of September 2017 and is funded by the MRC.

Winter Edition of HEDS Newsletter
Autumn is shaping up quite nicely, the leaves have turned golden brown, there is a crispness in the morning air and we are already looking forward to nights in front of the fire with a hot cup of Horlicks (other night time milky beverages are available). This time of the year also means our final edition of the HEDS newsletter for 2016. This month's cover is of Professor John Brazier with Paul Bloomfield MP at a Westminster launch of the ReQoL  patient reported outcome measure earlier this month.

We also celebrate The Decision Support Unit successfully renewing its contract till 2019 so it can continue to carry out the highly influential work on Technical Support Documents and the NICE Technology Appraisal Programme’s Methods Guide. It also serves to keep us at the forefront of methodological research and policy development.

We give an update on our established MOOCs, important methodological work on model structuring by Hazel Squires, new Fellowships on predicting future outcomes and cancer modelling for Ben Kearns and Rachid Rafia, and a summary of our presentations and workshops at ISPOR.

In this month's issue we look at:
