The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) is looking to recruit an early or mid-career researcher with strong background in statistics and/or econometrics, preferably in the area of causal inference, with an interest in evaluating the efficacy and comparative effectiveness of care technologies/services, to join the Health Economic and Decision Science (HEDS) section.

You will mainly work in conjunction with the ScHARR Knowledge Exchange (KE) team, providing support in the development of non-randomised study designs and associated analyses for the evaluation of care technologies or services. You will also provide statistical and/or econometric support to multi-disciplinary teams as part of other HEDS research and consultancy projects. Work will include the evaluation of new care technologies or services, usually within non-randomised study designs with a focus on the efficacy and/or comparative effectiveness of the care technology. These evaluations could be supported through the use of primary data collection or reliant on existing ‘realworld data’ (RWD) sources.

You should be familiar with methods for estimating comparative effectiveness using nonrandomised data, such as those methods detailed within NICE Technical Support Document 17: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/sites/default/files/2022-02/TSD17-DSU-Observational-data-FINAL.pdf

You will be encouraged to develop your own methodological research interests that are complementary to those within HEDS and help contribute to Masters level teaching and supervision.

We have an exciting opportunity in the Health Economics and Decision Science (HEDS) section in the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR)) to join the team at the forefront of development of public health economic modelling and microsimulation.

As a Research Assistant/Associate in Health Economic Modelling, you will work on applied and methodological research projects relating to interventions for obesity and prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

In addition to working to develop quantitative analyses of obesity interventions, you will contribute to the writing of research and consultancy proposals, and to the dissemination of research findings in peer-reviewed publications, at conferences and to non-academic audiences, as well as to the development and delivery of Masters level teaching, supervision of postgraduate students and the provision of other types of training.

Ideally you should have a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentation. You should have a Masters Degree or equivalent in a numerate subject, for example, mathematics, operational research, statistics or economics.

You will work within the Health Economics and Decision Science (HEDS) Section (www.shef.ac.uk/scharr/sections/heds) as part of a multidisciplinary team providing support to health economics/decision modelling research staff on a range of applied policy and methodological research with a particular focus on cost-effectiveness of healthcare and public health interventions. 


The work will involve contribution and support to a range of projects funded by research grants and knowledge exchange consultancy. The projects involve designing and undertaking health economic, statistical, and epidemiological modelling based analyses for policy appraisal. The work is for a wide range of decision makers. The funders/customers include the Department of Health and Social Care and related agencies, major UK research councils such as NIHR. Local NHS and government organisations and commercial organisations. Analysis of complex datasets and design of health economic models are key activities, as is methodological development to support cost-effectiveness analysis. Approaches used within the projects include decision analytic modelling (e.g. Markov and discrete event simulations), optimisation techniques, and econometrics and multivariate statistical analyses. 


You will provide support to senior health economists and modellers, contribute to the design of evaluations, undertake supervised analyses and contribute to peer-reviewed reports, journals and conference presentations. The successful applicant will also contribute to writing research and consultancy tenders. You will also contribute to the Section’s teaching responsibilities by delivering tutorials. A graduate qualification in a numerate subject (e.g. statistics, economics, operational research, mathematics, or quantitative applied sciences or social sciences) is essential and a post-graduate qualification or equivalent experience is desirable.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing support to health economics/decision modelling research staff on a range of applied policy and methodological research with a particular focus on the effects of alcohol and of tobacco.

The post is funded as part of the UK Prevention Research programme:- Shaping public health policies to reduce inequalities and harm (SPECTRUM). The projects involve designing and undertaking health economic, statistical, and epidemiological modelling-based analyses for policy appraisal.

Analysis of complex datasets and design of health economic models are key activities, as is methodological development to support the policy appraisal process. Job vacancy at ScHARR - Research Associate or a Research Fellow in Health Economics and Decision Modelling

Fancy working in a world-class research department?  Well look no further as we have a vacancy for a Research Associate or a Research Fellow in Health Economics and Decision Modelling.

You will support research and consultancy programmes in the Section of Health Economics and Decision Science (HEDS). The work will be focused on applied cost-effectiveness analysis and health economic modelling working on a range of projects and with a range of consultancy and research funders including NHS organisations, government bodies and agencies, healthcare and pharmaceutical companies, both nationally and internationally. The mix of work will be determined both by the needs of those work programmes and the expertise and interests of the successful candidate. 

You will contribute to the writing of research and consultancy proposals and conduct analyses as part of a broad portfolio of studies. We would expect those appointed to Research Fellow to lead proposals. You may also develop methodological work and provide associated training on those methods. You will disseminate findings in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to/ ensure wider impact with decision makers. 

Applicants should have research experience in health economics and decision modelling. A track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentation is desirable (essential for Research Fellow). You should expect to develop existing methodological research interests, complementary to those within HEDS. You will also contribute to the development and delivery of Masters level teaching, supervision of postgraduate students and the provision of other types of training. You should have a Masters Degree or equivalent in a numerate subject, for example, mathematics, operational research, statistics or economics.
