We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) to join the Health Economics and Decision Science (HEDS) Section as part of the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group (SARG). You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing support to health economics/decision modelling research staff on a range of applied policy and methodological research with a particular focus on the effects of alcohol and of tobacco.

The post is funded as part of the UK Prevention Research programme:- Shaping public health policies to reduce inequalities and harm (SPECTRUM). The projects involve designing and undertaking health economic, statistical, and epidemiological modelling-based analyses for policy appraisal.

Analysis of complex datasets and design of health economic models are key activities, as is methodological development to support the policy appraisal process. You will also contribute to writing research and consultancy tenders, and contribute to the Section’s teaching responsibilities by delivering tutorials.

You will have a graduate qualification in a numerate subject (e.g. statistics, economics, operational research, mathematics, or quantitative applied sciences or social sciences). A post-graduate qualification or equivalent experience is desirable.

This post is designed to undertake project work half-time and at the same time undertake parttime education on our Masters in Health Economics and Decision Modelling (with an option for a candidate who is already fully qualified to take the role part-time without undertaking the MSc).

The MSc in Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDM) is one of a suite of 3 masters programmes in the field of health economics, decision modelling and health technology assessment (HTA), the others being the on-line MSc in International Health Technology Assessment, Pricing and Reimbursement and the more econometrics-focussed MSc in Economics and Health Economics.

In the current economic climate with all health care systems facing resource constraints, the importance and use of health technology assessment (HTA) and health economic modelling is rapidly increasing as governments, insurers, healthcare organisations and the pharmaceutical industry recognise the need to estimate the costs, clinical outcomes and benefits of alternative healthcare technologies.

The MSc in Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDM) aims to develop students to be working professionals in HTA, decision modelling and health economic evaluation, capable of working immediately in health economics and outcomes research consultancies, university-based HTA centres, pharmaceutical and medical companies, healthcare and government organisations, or progressing in an academic career to PhD and further research.

Dr Matt Franklin announced as our new Director of our Masters in Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDM)

Dr Matt Franklin has taken over as Director of our Masters in Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDM).

The MSc in Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDM) is one of a suite of 3 MSc's that the University of Sheffield offer in the field of health economics, decision modelling and health technology assessment (HTA), the others being the on-line MSc in International Health Technology Assessment, Pricing and Reimbursement and the more econometrics-focused MSc in Economics and Health Economics. 

Dr Franklin said: "I am delighted to take over from Dr John Stevens as Director of the HEDM Masters course from the 1st July 2018. John has done an excellent job in the role over the last 3 years and I hope to maintain his high and impressive standards as I take over the role. As an alumni of the Economic and Health Economics (E&HE) Masters course (Director then and now being Prof Aki Tsuchiya - someone who has influenced my career as a health economist more than I think she knows), which I completed almost 10 years ago."
