The latest HEDS Newsletter is now out - you can read it here

A warm welcome to our latest newsletter. Despite the trials and tribulations of recent months, I’m
proud to say that our staff have taken a HEDS on approach to COVID and have once again been extremely busy and productive. Highlights in this issue include details of what we will
be presenting at the upcoming ISPOR meeting in November, and we reveal the name of our colleague who has joined ISPOR’s Health Sciences Policy Council.

Elsewhere, our outcomes group has been busy, with the launch of a new PROM’s checklist, and Dr Donna Rowen taking the lead on the new UK EQ-5D-5L valuation study.

Also in this issue are details of two COVID-related apps which have been developed by Colin Angus, and a cartoon YouTube video by Dr Nick Latimer looking at modelling cancer.

I hope you’ll agree there’s something for everyone!
Until the next issue, take care!

The latest HEDS Newsletter is out and you can download it here. Our own Newsletter Editor in Chair Mark Clowes can be seen holding the latest edition.

Below you can read about our latest news from HEDS Director, Dr Phil Shackley

“Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
We’re so glad you could attend
Come inside, come inside”

At the time of writing, a policy to implement a Minimum Unit Price for alcohol in Scotland is due to come into effect on May 1st. Work undertaken by ScHARR’s Alcohol Research Group (including several modellers from HEDS) has had a significant role in the introduction of the policy.

With our former Director, Simon Dixon, having sailed away into the sunset to the sound of Frank Sinatra (as far as China, as it happens, of which more inside), I’ve taken the opportunity to abuse my newly acquired power by allowing Emerson, Lake and Palmer to introduce the first HEDS newsletter of my tenure.
Since taking the reins last November, there has been a ton of stuff happening which we need to tell you about.
Another highlight is the work of researchers from HEDS, in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of York and Manchester, on the cost of avoidable medication errors in the NHS.
Elsewhere in HEDS, Dr Pete Dodd is part of large European Union-supported project investigating the impact of a combined tuberculosis and HIV intervention in high prevalence communities in South Africa and Zambia.
Other items include HEDS’ presence at the HTAi conference in Vancouver, our forthcoming MOOCs and short courses, and members of HEDS receiving awards from ISPOR and Jisc.
That’s it from me for this edition, so until the next time I’ll let The Doors have the last word:
“This is the end, beautiful friend”
Phil Shackley, Director of HEDS

The Winter edition of the HEDS Newsletter is out

Winter Edition of HEDS Newsletter
Autumn is shaping up quite nicely, the leaves have turned golden brown, there is a crispness in the morning air and we are already looking forward to nights in front of the fire with a hot cup of Horlicks (other night time milky beverages are available). This time of the year also means our final edition of the HEDS newsletter for 2016. This month's cover is of Professor John Brazier with Paul Bloomfield MP at a Westminster launch of the ReQoL  patient reported outcome measure earlier this month.

We also celebrate The Decision Support Unit successfully renewing its contract till 2019 so it can continue to carry out the highly influential work on Technical Support Documents and the NICE Technology Appraisal Programme’s Methods Guide. It also serves to keep us at the forefront of methodological research and policy development.

We give an update on our established MOOCs, important methodological work on model structuring by Hazel Squires, new Fellowships on predicting future outcomes and cancer modelling for Ben Kearns and Rachid Rafia, and a summary of our presentations and workshops at ISPOR.

In this month's issue we look at:
