HEDS at the Virtual ISPOR 2021 Conference

5th National PROMS Annual UK Research Conference - 17th June 2021

 

Now in its 5^th year, the annual PROMs Research Conference will take place at the University of Sheffield on Thursday 17^th June 2021.  The conference focuses on researcher-led activities on methodologies around the development, testing and use of PROMs in different contexts and settings.  The event is organised by a scientific group including Professor Tracey Young (School of Health Related Research, University of Sheffield and NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber theme co-lead); Dr Trish Holch (Co-lead of the Centre for Psychological Research, Leeds Beckett University and Honorary Research Fellow, University of Leeds) and Dr Jill Carlton (School of Health Related Research, University of Sheffield).   Along with support from clinicians and academics from across the University of Sheffield. 

 

The event includes a mixture of plenary sessions, workshops, oral presentations and posters by PROMs researchers from across the UK and internationally. This event brings together leading experts and early career researchers to engage with the latest advances in the field of PROMs research and implementation. 

 All researchers, health care practitioners/clinicians and PhD students involved in PROMs research are invited to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations. Calls for papers will open in autumn 2020.

PROMs 2020 Conference postponed

PROMS Cancelled

We are sorry to have to announce that the PROMS 2020 Conference is postponed due to the ongoing and escalating situation concerning COVID-19. We came to this difficult decision following government public health advice and the impact on our delegates attending.

A great deal of work has gone into the planning of this conference and we do not want it to go to waste so after carefully considering all the options, we have taken the decision to host the event in June 2021 at The University of Sheffield.

We understand that it is disappointing regarding this unavoidable postponement and we hope you’ll be able to join us next year. We will be in touch with you in the autumn with further information about the PROMs Conference 2021.

HEDS at the Vascular Societies Annual Scientific Meeting

HEDS colleagues will be in attendance at The Vascular Societies' Annual Scientific Meeting later this week. The meeting takes place from 27th-29th November at Manchester Central Convention Complex.

in June 2016 we, University of Sheffield, hosted the 1^st National PROMs Research Conference.  The event hosted 24 parallel sessions.

This year’s ISPOR Europe conference is taking place in Copenhagen (2-6 November 2019) and as usual, HEDS staff including Professor John Brazier will be representing our work at ScHARR.

Other staff in attendance include:

·         Professor Allan Wailoo & Dr. Monica Hernandez who will be delivering a short course on Mapping to Estimate Utility Values from Non-Preference-Based Outcome Measures (Sunday 3^rd November).

·         Dr. Praveen Thokala will be presenting a “How-to guide” on developing an ISPOR Good practices task force (Monday 4^th November)

·         Dr Donna Rowen will be presenting an issues panel entitled ‘Valuing Health in Children – Where are we now?’ 

·         Meanwhile, Dr Olena Mandrik will be chairing an ISPOR Task Force meeting on ‘Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews with Cost and Cost-Effectiveness Outcomes’, as well as delivering a workshop and a poster.

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Conference

After the successful inaugural conference at Sheffield in 2016 the centre for Psychological Research (PsyCen) at Leeds Beckett University are hosting the 4th annual PROMS research conference on the 13th of June 2019. Advances in Patient Reported Outcomes: Integration and Innovation

Call for abstracts

The PROMS conference welcomes oral and poster abstracts from clinicians, researchers, patient partners, industry, SMEs and others working in the field. Due to the demand for presentation slots we are introducing this year a 'Rapid Report' oral session (a 3-minute, 5 slide maximum oral presentation).

Andy Tattersall to deliver Keynote at the Business Librarians Association Conference

HEDS Information Specialist Andy Tattersall is one of the three keynotes at this year's BLA Conference taking place at Swansea University. The three day conference takes place from 27th-29th June with the theme 'Making Waves'. Andy will be delivering his keynote on the 28th with a talk titled; "Staying afloat in a sea of technological change". 

The other two keynote speakers are 
Michael Draper, Associate Professor in Law, Swansea University and Professor Sally Bradley, Academic Lead in Accreditation, Award and Recognition, HEA and Professor, Sheffield Hallam University.

HEDS staff in Vancouver for HTAI

Once again we have a team of staff representing HEDS for the annual HTAI conference, which this year will be in Vancouver (1^st-5^th June).  Dr Andrew Booth and Dr Fiona Campbell will be co-presenting a workshop.

Professor Eva Kaltenthaler, Dr Marrissa Martyn St. James and Mark Clowes are presenting a pre-conference workshop on Rapid Review Methods for HTA. Mark will also be giving an oral presentation on the use of text mining to identify domains of wellbeing. Dr Jean Hamilton will be presenting a paper on Evidence synthesis with limited studies, based on the work of Dr Kate Ren. If you are attending the conference, we hope you can come along to some of our sessions and feel free to speak to any of our staff, they're very friendly!

Dr Kate Ren to deliver talk at the Promoting Statistical Insight (PSI) Conference - 'Breaking Boundaries in Drug Development'

Dr Kate Ren is to deliver talk at the Promoting Statistical Insight (PSI) Conference - Breaking Boundaries in Drug Development in Damrak, Amsterdam. Dr Ren's talk is titled: Evidence synthesis with limited studies: incorporating genuine prior information about between-study heterogeneity

Abstract:

Background: Meta-analyses using fixed effect and random effects models are commonly applied to synthesise evidence from randomised controlled trials in health technology assessment. The models differ in their assumptions and the interpretation of the results. Fixed effect models are often used because there are too few studies with which to estimate the between-study standard deviation from the data alone, but not that heterogeneity is unlikely to be expected.

Objectives: The aim is to propose a framework for eliciting an informative prior distribution for the between-study standard deviation in a Bayesian random effects meta-analysis model to genuinely represent heterogeneity when data are sparse.

Methods: We developed an elicitation method using external information such as empirical evidence and experts’ beliefs on the ‘range’ of treatment effects in order to infer the prior distribution for the between-study standard deviation. We also developed the method to be implemented in R.

Results: The three-stage elicitation approach allows uncertainty to be represented by a genuine prior distribution to avoid making misleading inferences. It is flexible to what judgments an expert can provide, and is applicable to all common types of outcome measure.

Conclusions: The choice between using a fixed effect or random effects meta-analysis model depends on the inferences required and not on the number of available studies. Our elicitation framework captures external evidence about heterogeneity and overcomes the often implausible assumption that studies are estimating the same treatment effect, thereby improving the quality of inferences in decision making.

The PROMS Research Conference will be hosted by the Centre for Patient Reported Outcomes Research at the University of Birmingham, UK on 20th June 2018.
Abstract submission is open. They welcome oral and poster abstracts from clinicians, researchers, patient partners, industry, SMEs and others working in the field. Professor John Brazier (HEDS, YH CLAHRC) is part of the organising committee.

Abstract Guidelines
All abstracts should be submitted via the abstract submission website. Abstract submission will close on Wednesday 28th February 2018.
Abstracts should be written in plain text and be a maximum of 300 words. Tables and images are not allowed in the abstract.

HEDS in South Africa

A delegation from HEDS recently visited Johannesburg for a workshop where we presented an overview of our health economics training and research. The workshop was hosted by the Priority Cost Effectiveness Lessons for Health Systems Strengthening (PRICELESS) network based at the School of Public Health in Wits University, who are one of the partners, together with NICE International, in the International Decision Support Initiative (iDSI).

As well as potential collaborations on teaching, research collaborations were also discussed and it is hoped that the two organisations will work together on a range of HTA and Public Health topics.  Simon Dixon, Clara Mukuria, Abu Alshreef and Duncan Gillespie were at the workshop and can be contacted for further information and potential collaborations.

PROMs Conference, Sheffield, 9th June 2016

In the UK there are many PROMs events, however there are no national researcher-led activities on methodologies around development, testing and use of PROMS in different contexts and settings. The aim of this conference is to bring together leading researchers to discuss cutting edge developments in PROMs research. There will be three plenary sessions on ‘Realist synthesis’, using ‘Computer Adaptive Testing’ and ‘Wellbeing’. The morning will comprise of sixteen parallel sessions which will be open to competition and posters; submissions from PhD and young researchers will be encouraged.

This inaugural PROMs Conference is hosted by Professor John Brazier, Elizabeth Gibbons, Professor Jose M Valderas and Dr Georgina Jones. The plenary speakers are Associate Professor Joanne Greenhalgh, Professor Tim Croudace and Professor John Brazier.  The event will be chaired by Ray Fitzpatrick and will take place at The Holiday Inn Royal Victoria.
