Review of methods used to estimate and model utility values for children and adolescents in NICE technology appraisals

Researchers in HEDS, on behalf of NICE DSU, undertook a review of methods used in NICE technology appraisals to estimate and model utility values for children and adolescents. The review included 31 NICE appraisals, and found limited use of child and adolescent population-specific measures to generate health state utility values for children and adolescents in technology appraisals submitted to NICE. Often appraisals used an adult specific measure to reflect the health of children and adolescents.

The Decision Support Unit (DSU) is commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence(NICE) to provide a research and training resource to support the Institute’s Technology Appraisal Programme.

DSU provide online training on mapping: estimating health state utility values from other measures

NICE asked the DSU to produce training materials for Appraisal Committee members on some of the more technical issues related to NICE Appraisal Methods. The first of these training resources is now freely available online, covering key issues related to the concept of mapping: estimating health state utility values from other measures. The aim is to provide advice that will help Appraisal Committee members, most of who are not specialists in this area, to interrogate the evidence that is presented to them and help them to have more confidence in the decisions they are required to make.  

This is the first of three online sessions that have been agreed with NICE to date.

HEDS research as a special edition of PharmacoEconomics

HEDS have contributed no-less than nine articles to a comprehensive compilation for a PharmacoEconomics special edition. The papers are robust recommendations in sourcing and using appropriate health state utility values in economic models in health care.

They are intended as a reference source for state of the art evidence on good practice across the full spectrum of needs associated with health state utility values that inform decision analytic models. The articles cover international regulations for utility values for health technology assessment, generic preference-based measures, condition-specific preference-based measures, identifying, reviewing and synthesizing utility values from the literature, mapping, collecting utility values in clinical studies, using utility values in decision models, and estimating utility values for comorbidities. The papers have emerged from a collaboration between academics at Sheffield University and experts from industry (at Takeda Pharmaceuticals). 

Andrew Lloyd who wrote the editorial for the special edition said: "This is an informative set of papers that will be useful for anyone working in the fields of pharmacoeconomics and health technology assessment."

The nine papers were authored by Professor John Brazier, Dr Donna Rowen, Roberta Ara, Dr Clara Mukuria, Dr Tessa Peasgood, Dr Tracey Young, Dr Suzy Paisley alongside external collaborators.
