Summary:
The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), University of Sheffield is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to develop economic and health impact evidence, modelling and analysis, focusing on wider complex system effects of unhealthy commodities and prevention policies in the UK. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join an internationally leading public health research team at a world-leading university.
You will work on the SPECTRUM project “Shaping Public Health Policies to Reduce Inequalities and Harm”, a five-year project funded by a UK Prevention Research Partnership Consortium Award that brings together researchers from 10 UK Universities. The project focuses on the producers of unhealthy commodities and aims to support governments, local
authorities, public health bodies and other organisations in dealing with their influence. SPECTRUM will mainly focus on tobacco and alcohol but will also consider unhealthy food and drinks.
You will develop new evidence on the impacts of alcohol and tobacco, their associated diseases, and prevention policies on the wider economy. Outcomes will include: impacts on consumers’ work productivity, employment and early retirement; changes in revenue to retailers; gains and losses in different sectors of the UK economy; changes in direct and indirect tax revenues to government; and public sector costs from healthcare, social care and crime. You will be expected to develop detailed protocols for this work, identify and negotiate access to relevant data, analyse this data using appropriate methods
(likely to include ‘input-output modelling’ to understand interactions between different sectors of the economy), prepare manuscripts and communicate results to stakeholders, the public and scientific peers.
You will have direct research experience of modelling in a field such as health economics, economics or demography. You will also have experience in and an enthusiasm to develop research in public health. You will have postgraduate qualifications in a numerate discipline such as data science, mathematics, statistics, health economics, economics, demography, epidemiology, operational research or related subjects.
The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development. We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
